The Derwent Valley

The bases of the Derwent Valley, and the Wye Valley beyond, lie deep below the main gritstone scarp. Here there are villages, scattered hamlets and farmsteads, many established in the Medieval period and earlier, sited in this advantageous farming area.

The valleys have been attractive to gentry and lords alike, with several important Post-Medieval parkland landscapes created over the centuries, where ‘nature' was idealised for the pleasure of those living within grand houses.
