Medieval Landscape

In Medieval times the limestone plateau of the Peak District was radically different to that of today.

The village of Flagg (right) is a planned medieval settlement with farmsteads along a single village street, with a fossilised strip field (left) on the gentle slopes above

The Medieval villages often have a planned regular layout, normally laid out at one point of time, perhaps at the instigation of the local lords of manors.   Every farmstead plot had timber buildings and strip fields behind.  These village fields nestled at the heart of a sea of open commons stretching from place to place.  There were also several larger settlements where Medieval markets and fairs were held.
