What can I do?

Visit a River or Stream

To appreciate their beauty and tranquility, why not follow the course of a Peak District river yourself?  Explore the moorland cloughs or amble along the slow, meandering river of the White Peak.

But remember, it is essential you keep to the public footpath and observe the Countryside Code in order to avoid trampling and disturbing the wildlife.

Wolfscote Dale, east of the A515, between Hartington and Ilam

Why not try this circular walk (about 5kms) and take in a wide variety of White Peak habitats, including the River Dove?  Click here to download the route instructions.  For more general information try our Dovedale factsheet.

Lathkill Dale

Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve

As part of this National Nature Reserve (NNR), English Nature looks after Cressbrook Dale, Lathkill Dale and Monks Dale.   All have public access, but please keep to the footpaths.  The River Lathkill (Grid Ref: SK 42033654) is an incredible wildlife haven.   This is a chance to see White Peak wildlife close up - in particular flowers and butterflies - using a network of public and concessionary paths.  It is open all year, but at its best in the summer months!

Miller's Dale viaduct from Monsal Head

Miller's Dale

Beautiful Miller's Dale offers the chance to see the dipper whilst exploring a classic limestone dale.  The old cotton mill at Litton Mill has recently been converted, but its location next to the river serves to demonstrate the impact that the Industrial Revolution had on this area.  Car parking is available at Monsal Head (Grid Ref: SK 41853715) and Tideswell Dale (Grid Ref: SK 41543742).

To find out public transport information download our Biodiversity Action Sheet 3.

Help protect wildlife by keeping to visible paths where possible.
Keep dogs on leads, especially during the bird nesting season.
Find out more about limestone dales by visiting our archive.
For more ideas on how you can help wildlife go to our Biodiversity Action Sheets or visit our Taking Part section.
