FloodplainsWhere the water table is near to the surface, the ground is often boggy and waterlogged. This provides ideal conditions for a rich display of plants such as ragged robin and marsh marigold. The mosaic of floodplain wetlands found in the Peak District support a number of birds such as the lapwing, snipe and curlew. Tall, fen vegetation is scarce but does occur, where meadowsweet and common valerian grow. Harvest mice have been known of in these areas.
Unfortunately the pressures of farming has resulted in much of the wetter areas being drained and this has obviously led to a decline in this type of habitat. Click here to find out more about the Peak District Biodiversity Action Plan for Rush Pastures. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |
