Visit a Limestone Dale

To appreciate their beauty and tranquility, why not visit a Peak District limestone dale yourself?  Explore the dale side meadows, walk by the river or sit and watch the world go by.

But remember, it is essential you keep to the public footpath and observe the Countryside Code in order to avoid trampling and disturbing the wildlife.

Lathkill Dale

 Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve

As part of this National Nature Reserve (NNR), English Nature looks after Cressbrook Dale, Lathkill Dale and Monks Dale.   All have public access, but please keep to the footpaths.  Lathkill Dale (Grid Ref: SK 42033654) is one of Derbyshire's most spectacular limestone dales and an incredible wildlife haven.  This is a chance to see White Peak wildlife close up - in particular flowers and butterflies - using a network of public and concessionary paths.  It is open all year, but at its best in the summer months!

Tideswell Dale (Grid Ref SK 41543742 )

Near to the village of Tideswell, this limestone dale is owned and managed by the Peak District National Park Authority.  The flower-rich grasslands are enclosed by dramatic rocky outcrops, with Ravenstor Youth Hostel perched above.  Toilets, car parking and wheelchair accessible routes.

 Dovedale (Grid Ref SK 41443509)

Follows the fantastic river Dove along its course through this amazing limestone dale.  There are many places to stop and admire the beautiful scenery.  For more general information try our Dovedale factsheet.

Whilst on your visit to a dale, you could always try a magic spot to enhance your experience!

To find out public transport information download our Biodiversity Action Sheet 3.

Take Action for Limestone Dales

If you would like to help safeguard the future of trees and woodlands here are some actions you could take:

Try to cut down air pollution by burning fewer fossil fuels.  Put on a jumper instead of turning up the heating.  Turn off the lights, television or radio when you leave a room and don't leave them on standby!   Instead of using your car, try public transport, or better still, walk or ride a bike.
If you visit the Peak District, perhaps to walk, climb or cycle, why not take a wildflower guide book along next time and find out more?  Have fun but please avoid sensitive wildlife areas (usually signed).
Find out about supporting Plantlife, your local Wildlife Trust or the National Trust, all of whom are working to look after our limestone dales for the future.
Help protect wildlife by keeping to visible paths where possible and keep dogs on leads especially during the bird nesting season.

Find out more about limestone dales by visiting our archive. For more ideas on how you can help wildlife go to our Biodiversity Action Sheets or visit our Taking Part section.
