Limestone Scree

show larger in a new window

Commonly found on the dale-sides, scree is the result of rock fall from the limestone cliffs above.

Scree is often bare rock, but a few plants are able to grow here including the scarce limestone fern and the dark-red helleborine. In some areas, ash has managed to take hold and colonise.
