What is being done to save our limestone dales?

Protection Through Agreement

Limestone dales can be protected by law, for example:

Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs)
 Special Areas of Conservation
 Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve

Financial Incentives are available to landowners to conserve and enhance their limestone dales, for example through:

 Countryside Stewardship Scheme (CSS)
 White Peak Wildlife Enhancement Scheme

Protection Through Partnership

The Peak District Biodiversity Action Plan (PDBAP) has been compiled by a partnership of conservation organisations, government agencies and landowner/manager representatives, led by the Peak District National Park Authority.  It aims to highlight threatened habitats and species and to prescribe measures that will ensure their survival.

The PDBAP hopes to enhance and conserve the immense wealth of wildlife found in the dales and ensure that these unique areas, found nowhere else in Britain, can be enjoyed and appreciated in the future by:

  • Creating new dale-side habitats, linking isolated fragments wherever possible
  • Restoring overgrazed or scrub invaded dale-side grassland, especially where of particular local or national importance

The PDBAP hopes to achieve these aims by numerous actions and a mixture of partnerships, planning powers and persuasion including:

  • Ensure all planning applications are adequately assessed in relation to their impact on limestone dales
  • Consider the creation of new limestone dales, including the restoration of disused quarries
  • Manage the recreational use of limestone dales to enable people to enjoy them without adversely impacting on the dales' wildlife
