Our wildlife, hills and dales are not here by chance. There is an underlying blueprint that creates the magnificent landscape of the Peak District, and supports the diverse wildlife found here.

The key to understanding that blueprint lies in understanding the geology - the rocks beneath. Limestone, shale and gritstone form the foundations upon which this 'living landscape' has evolved.  Each of these rock types supports their own distinctive habitat - a perfect relationship between rock, soil, plants and animals.
