What can I do?

Visit a moorland

If you would like to visit a moorland in the Peak District, and experience for yourself the abundance of flowers, wealth of colour and sounds of wildlife, then there are many examples you could try.

But remember, it is essential you keep to the public footpaths and observe the Countryside Code in order to avoid disturbing the wildlife or the farmers' livestock.

Take action

If you would like to help safeguard the future of moorlands here are some actions you could take:

Try to cut down air pollution by burning fewer fossil fuels.  Put on a jumper instead of turning up the heating.  Turn off the lights, television or radio when you leave a room and don’t leave them on standby! Instead of using your car, try public transport, or better still, walk or ride a bike.

If you visit a moorland be aware of fire hazards.  Be sure to never drop any litter and don’t smoke on the moorland during dry spells.   Find out more from the leaflet on ‘Preventing Damaging Moorland Fire’.

Help protect wildlife by keeping to visible paths where possible and keep dogs on leads especially during the bird nesting season.

Buy products from enviro-businesses such as honey made from bees on heather moorland.  Schemes like this provide moorland farmers with an alternative income for maintaining the moorland for conservation purposes.

Find out more about moorlands by visiting our archive.   Much research has been done on moorland erosion to gain a better understanding of the processes involved and possible restoration techniques, eg. The Peak District Moorland Management Project.
