In the Peak District, gritstone and shale are the foundation of the Dark Peak.

These brown-grey sedimentary rocks can be seen through the blanket of moorland, in the fabric of buildings but most impressively, as high cliffs or edges that dominate the landscape. Gritstone and shale surround the limestone plateau on three sides and around Kinder Scout in the north, reach over 600 metres above sea level.
