Bill Gordon, Estate Warden

What's so special about Stanage?

Stanage is special to me partly because I've lived here for over 20 years, partly because I have to look after the wildlife. I see my role much more as looking after the wildlife on the Estate. 20 years ago it was not so important, it was to do with agriculture, the campsite. Over the 20 years, I've changed. My role fits in with the Authority, SSSI, SPA, and those organisations for wildlife - for ground nesting bird.  They need a voice in any kind of discussion, they can't say what they want. Its my role to be led by the ornithologist, biologists, zoologists, so I'm better able to understand what a complicated area it is and why it needs somebody like the Park who are the only ones who I feel are going to be able to look after such complicated land.

What changes would you like to see?

It's an impossible one - to get rid of the motor car from the Estate itself. The car allows people who live in urban areas access to come and enjoy something I enjoy everyday because I live here, but it causes its own problems. So the one change I would like to see is to remove the motor car from the scene altogether. I realise I can ask that, but I wouldn't push it as a goal - perhaps in 100 years when we are all thinking about the impact.

In this particular instance what would help the wildlife more than anything else would be to remove the motorcars.
